2005 - 2007

International teams in Cochabamba Bolivia 2005 to 2007

Well where I start to begin to explain my time in Bolivia over the past 2 years.

I came to Bolivia in 2003 working with SIM. I left one month early as my father was dying of cancer and I arrived home 8 hours too late to say goodbye to him but I was thankful to hear that while I was away he gave his life back to Jesus so I can rest to know where he is.

3 years later I returned to Cochabamba but this time with International teams as they worked with the children I feel in love with in 2003.
I knew my team leader would be leaving after my first year there and I also knew it was going to be hard to stay on with an all Bolivian team as normally there were missionaries coming and going.
In my 2nd year I didn’t have much support as I felt I was working alone as my mission was divided around town and didn’t meet regularly.

“Centre de Amistad y Apoyo”.
It operates from 3 – 5 pm Monday till Thursday and Saturday nights.
It is a place where children can come and have a safe place to play and do their homework and just receive special attention where its lacking in the home as many family our out working or drinking or generally not home to care for children like you normally would.

I taught the 2-5 years old. They enjoyed Bible stories and singing especially. (By the way this is all in Spanish) their favorite game is to hit a balloon around the classroom.

I have been preparing them for my departure but they keep asking
“Hermana Glenda” who will teach us?
And another little boy always asks where I was if I am ever away and I say, “oh did you miss me” and he replies “yes”.

In my spare time in the mornings in my first year I assisted at an orphanage run by an Australian man and his English wife and they have been here for 10 yrs and have 35 children in one home.
Sept last year I feel in love with a 5 year old child and I talked to peter regarding national adoption and I did further investigation and decided that it was possible for me to adopt a little girl.
She moved in just before Christmas and became part of my life.
I had to learn how to be involved with a Bolivian school and also my little girl was sick each month with various illnesses so I had to learn to communicate with doctors on how to help my little girl.

The adoption process was going very slowly as I was advised to use the lawyer from the home Mily came from and this lady seemed to lie constantly and just never show up to appointments but promised all was in process and each month I would demand my legal documents and she told me to have patience and wait and wait and wait… until in May 07,
We discovered that there were 2 adoptions for the same child! and the home hadn’t been told about the first adoption as that was International and when we (the orphanage workers and I) spoke to the lawyer she told me that this was ok and that she could stop the international adoption as national adoption always wins over; as international adoption can take another child in the future but as time dragged on we discovered that this lawyer had been lying the whole time and on the 4th July 2007. I lost her forever!

The Day before my heart broke!
I sent her back to the orphanage for one night’s sleep as she had a meeting with the children authorities in the morning and I went to visit her the next day and asked how her meeting was they kept asking her where she lived and with whom which this alerted the authorities as they didn’t have any records of her living with me even though I thought the lawyer knew what she was doing.
Mily knew something was wrong as she saw how I had been crying and she heard the lawyer discussing things and she said she didn’t want to stay here and that she wanted to come home and I said that she needed to have a holiday at the orphanage until all the documents where in order for her to return but…. After the 2nd day I rang to see how she was and I was told that she was gone.
The authorities took her away while she was sleeping and she asked where she was going and they said that they were taking her to a hospital and she said can my Mummy come and they said no!
She was put in another orphanage outside of town so they could prepare her for her new adoptive family as they told her that she could never return to me.
She met her new family and was taken to another country. So as I finish up my mission this week and leave next week I have prepare myself to leave again on another grief. Mily had 11 cousins waiting for her in Australia and a large church & family for her but unfortunately the lawyer deceived us and we both never got to say Goodbye. I have to trust that God will take care of her even though say may not be in a Christian home anymore.

Unexpected hospital visit in a foreign country

Well where I start.
I returned to the doctor after having blood tests done etc to find out that I had mild Typhoid and various other things. I was a little shocked as I don’t eat out much and I don’t buy lettuce. I was then told it could come from various places. No washing your vegetables or not washing your hands regularly or eating vegetables from a restaurant that haven’t washed their food first. There is a string of ideas and you just don’t know where it came from as it can be in your body for a while unnoticed.
So after talking with the doctor he said to come back at 5.30 pm and I am sure he said it would only take an hour and then do the same for the next two days. So I had arranged to come back at 5.30 pm for one hour and then had arranged to meet up with several people and had many other things happening in the coming days which I ended up canceling as I ended up in hospital for nearly 2 days to my surprise!
Now first you need to remember I have the language barrier. I have enough to get me by but when it comes to doctors etc I didn’t understand everything! So they kept asking me did I bring my PJ’S and I said “why?” I am only here for one hour and I also saw a friend who said he had it done and he stayed overnight so by this time I am getting a little nervous and I felt alone as I had no one with me. Also, because of the language barrier they did not understand me either so they were not answering my questions as if I had known before hand I was staying overnight I would have had things more organized but that wasn’t meant to be.
They told me to get into bed and when I saw the LARGE intervenes drip I was panicking more as I could tell I was going to be here for hours and so once again I asked, “How long does that take to go inside my body”? And the nurse replied 48 hrs. So by this time I am stressing more as I hadn’t told my neighbors that I wasn’t coming home and they would start worrying where I was and am I ok? All I had was my days clothes and I was limited on whom I could call to pass the news around. So thankfully my a friend helped me with many calls etc as no one was answering my text messages from my mobile phone and as it’s a new phone I only had limited numbers in it to call people. The most important was my bible study group and my boss, whom never came to visit.
I was expecting 1 or 2 visitors and I discovered that I was the only one in this clinic overnight so every 30 minutes I had a nurse come in and check my drip etc or take my temperature. I never got any sleep the first night as my left arm was attached to this drip so I had to carry this stand around when I needed the bathroom etc, So the next morning I was feeling a little lonely and feeling that I had no friends to visit me and wandered how I was going to survive till Wednesday.
Thankfully in one way a girl from a seven day Adventist church came in my room with the same illness as me but one frustrating part was that she had visitors every hour and every minute on the phone so I found that a little difficult so by lunch time I rang my friend again to see if she could find a phone number to call my neighbors as normally I could call them to say hay can you bring some change of clothes over etc. Thankfully, phoebe sent from her home some PJ”S and a book over via taxi for me so I could feel a little decent for the public. (She was my God send) she couldn’t visit but at least she sent the taxi for the delivery.
My boss finally rang to say he had received a call from phoebe and asked why I was in the clinic, which I explained, but after chatting to him today after the event he told me he didn’t understand why I was in the clinic and he thought I was just at home with a drip.
I finally got a visitor from my neighbor as they were going to call the police and look for me as they were panicking where I was.
So ending up in hospital in a foreign country all unplanned causes many problems as everybody life was going on normal unaware where I was and what was happening to me.
I was thankful to be home safe and sound and took the required medications for the next week plus the weeks’ worth of injections. (This explained my weight loss 5 kilos less then when I was in Australia.

While in Cochabamba for 2 years I got involved into the local community with a wonderful women’s group and various church groups.
I developed strong friendships with many Bolivian ladies and I still in contact with many of them 3 years later.
My church in Australia always commented on how well my Spanish was and I said it was all thanks to my language school and my Bolivian family whom I lived with for 7 months and also my work as all in Spanish and not much English. That was the advantage of being single on the mission field as you could focus on your language learning and just get out there compared to others that were either home with children or living on an English speaking compound.

A few extra things that happened in my first year there were;
1. Stolen passport and delayed in Chile for 5 days
2. Blocked credit card in machine and then $800 us stolen
3. Waited 10 months for 1 year visa
4. Cancelled cruise in Australia for my 40th birthday as I was awaiting adoption news.
5. Paid for 2 year visa for adoption (but no child any more)
6. Lost card in machine but this time ok just waited till Christmas for my new card. So thanks to another Australian in Cochabamba

Journey of Bolivia 2008- 2009 to come later on.

Bolivia Bella documents

Hola, mi Amigos.
In February to August 2003 I went to Cochabamba (Bolivia) South America, from Australia.
I had only been to Africa for 3 weeks so this was a giant step to make, so after having a 3 year Christian relationship end I decided to get some mission training and go do what I felt God was calling me to do.

I was sent to Cochabamba because there were two Australian families there to support me. They ran a quilt making ministry. Bolivian women would come twice a month and receive a quilt kit to make and they would receive encouragement and fellowship and a small Gospel message. Many sewed with the old Singer foot pedal machine and many didn’t have electricity at home. One lady I heard that she would take her machine out into the street lights to sew late at night.
They normally turned up with a great job done and the products would eventually get sold to foreigners travelling through Cochabamba.

The organises did a great job but it drove me crazy as all I did was sort all the material squares from blue and green etc. So living on my own without a TV or anyone to talk to this was a little frustrating and lonely. During my time there feel in love with a few extra ministries with Children as this was my passion. One in particular was a drop in centre for kids to have a safe place to hang out and play instead of going home to an abusive home.
This brought me great joy and fellowship with other workers as well.

I was due to leave in the September but I received a phone call telling me that my father was close to death with his cancer which had reappeared while I was away. I had a around the world ticket and didn’t want to go straight to Australia as the family said I would be home in time to see my father.
So I headed over to England to see some friends I had made in Bolivia and when I arrived I received another call asking me to come home now! Well, from Bolivia to England then Australia is not just possible as it take a lot out of you so I rested a few days then arranged my ticket to go straight to Australia and not visit my ex flat mate in Japan.

Now, I had no knowledge that he had passed away while I was flying home as with the time difference I couldn’t call family as they may have been asleep? So, when I arrived my mother and my friend collected me and I asked could we go straight to see him and I assumed that if they had red eyes I would know but as they didn’t I thought I was home in time. On the way home they wanted to stop in at McDonalds which I didn’t want to do, so after we had ordered our food, I proceeded to ask how my father was.

I arrived home 8 hours too late...... The hospital was kind enough to keep my father until I arrived at the hospital. The rest is history. I am just glad that my father accepted Jesus and now is with him.

My next letter will be about 2005 -7
It may take a few letters to do this one.

Goosebumps no: 3

Dear Friends, no: 3 March 09.
sorry I haven't sent a newsletter in a while as I didn't have much to report on. You all got my email so that is why I didn't do a newsleter but someone enquired when is the next one coming? so I had to think about what to write about.
Since resigning from Acrisbol as they are not really a team but many individuals doing things in their own time. In February I was called upon to mind phoebes house so she could attend other meetings while I chat with her friends until she arrived home. I did a lot of making cups of tea and odd jobs on the computer and just basic run around town. Phoebe is still greiving the loss of her husband and enjoys having many people calling by at all odd times of the day and night and when we hosted the craft group most would come 3 hrs late when I am ready to leave.
In the last few weeks my american friend Kim has asked me to help out at “Ninos con Valor “ til another team member completes her 6 wks of spanish so Kim and I rotate mornings and afternons. We have 3 overnight babies or tots and about 4 daycare kids. These children may have AIDS or are malnurished. They have come out a home where there are 180 children and only have 1 adult to 30 babies so they have a busy time.
We have a team of Bolivian ladies plus a few westerners. Our daily routine is to give breakfast, lunch and dinner and Bath then and play with them and give medications when needed and constantly change nappies, one after the other; Many with nice surprises in their nappies as when they are sick is shows up later on.
G: Is our sick baby. Eventhough he is one year old, he is very small and has been in hospital most of his life. He is our “Blue Baby” He has a whole in his heart and needs an expensive operation and we are not allowed to leave him cry as he goes blue and could be dangerous. In the last couple of weeks with us he has gained weight and is very happy and loves to blow kisses and wave to you.
D” & his sister “L”
These kids come most days but their mum has problems with her Alcoholic husband, so for the safety of her children, she has been leaving the kids with us overnight and visits during the day to see her kids. N.C.V . are currently helping their mother set up home away from the father. Both the children are very sick and are often sad so its a hard job to keep them happy. Just last week I have broken the ice with them, so now I know what makes them happy!
“J ” de Dios.
Is our active 2 year old and a little more healthier! He is still very behind for his age but will catch up soon. He has a bit of a temper and throws his body all over the floor so we have to be ready to catch him when it happens.

“D” is our fat litlte one. “Gordito”
He recently has had a visit from his dad who lives in a home as he is only 18yrs old and the mother has passed away who was 21. He gets a visit once or twice a week from his dad. He loves to blow rasberries while we are trying to feed him which we end up all dirty!

Last week we said goodbye to Gordon and Evelyn.
They come from England every year for 3 mths to work in the American orphange I help at. I have met them many times and I have a beautiful memory of going out with them when I had mily! They had a surprise when I turned up at the airport but they didnt realise that 30 Girls dressed for school came and surprised them and farewelled them. The girls kept asking if was was going back to the USA as they are used to people coming and going but I said I am from OZ and G & E are from England! I made the effort to go to the airport early as I will never see them again!
Prayer Points
Pray for the financial situation around the world that is sending a lot of American missionary home !
Thank God for my By-monthly, Tri-monthly & Six monthly supporters.
Thanks to God that I had a great 4 days away in “Tarija” while carnival was one.
For strength to say good bye and go home Late April? ( All explained in previous email).
For all the little ones I have just grown to love before leaving and the workmates also that they will come to know Jesus soon:

Ninos con Valor

HI
Last week I started helping my friend at Ninos con valor.
A centre for some children to come during the day and others stay overnight.
some may have Aids or malnutrition.

One little baby has a dad who is only 18 and his father comes to visit once a week.
It broke my heart seeing this little baby with someone he doesnt seem to know.
His mum has died of Aids and the father lives in a home.

Thankfully he is receiving good nutrition and care at NCV.

I am happy to help here until late April.

Amistad

Humpty Jumpty sat on the wall.. HD had a fall

Dear Friends

Today was a big day in many ways

1st I was invited to go and visit a day care centre for babies with AIDS
on the way home I went to buy my tray of eggs and as I live in a different house to last time I thought well I could either walk home with this tray of eggs or I could catch a bus down to the other end of the street, so I caught the bus and as we went by a medical centre I noticed a young man outside holding a wrapped up baby and crying and I saw many people trying to comfort him.

So I thought maybe the baby had just died as he looked very distraught.

Here I was worried about breaking my eggs on the way home and this man maybe was greiving the loss of his child but when I mentioned it to another friend here she suggested that maybe his wife had just died and that is why he was hanging on tight to the baby but I said that the baby wasnt moving so I can only pray that this man has family and friends around him tonight during his grief no matter what has happened and God comfort him.

Then I went out to the orphange for my last day, it was hard to say good bye to all the girls I have grown to love as Phoebe is due back tomorrow and I don't know what is in store for me with her so I have to trust God and hope to return to these girls in any spare time I have.

Immagration Burecancy

we were that close to getting carnet but they needed my old carnet number
I said I dont know where those docs are as I was back in australia and I would not
know where to find them

then when I went home thanks to God I found my old one year visa so we went back to immagration in the arvo
then they said they needed to find my old card so they had to look in storage

Now what we dont understand is that we have done this one year visa as a new person entering the coutry as they wouldnt allow me to continue with what I had. Then they found it and mad us get photo copies of everything so each thing just kept costing me money.

I finally got my photo taken for carnet but we were told to come back monday as they still dont have materials to make the carnet.

So now we have to go back on monday

I am so far behind finacially as they trippled the price of the 30 visa and put all the other prices. I have paid for each document or photocopy etc too much to explain

Phoebe is due back on sunday
pray that my extra suit case arrives with her as the roads are closed from Santa Cruz to Cochabamba where she was hoping someone was going to collect the cases.
So I pray that she will put the suitcases the whole way thru

Un dia loca

After not sleeping well allnight due to heavy rain and a head cold I accidently slept in til 10.30am I read the clock at 5am and thought I am not getting up til 8am as I knew I had to make pancakes for my weekely prayer meeting even if friends didnt show up.
So when I got up I was shocked that it was 10.30am so maybe I read the clock wrong and it was really 8.30am so after getting up at 10.30 and wandering where my friends where as no one had rung I checked my mobile and discovered that one friend has chancelled due to heavy rain so was glad to me home as it was very wet and cold and just when I was going to enter the shower the door bell rang and was surprised to see a friend here for the prayer meeting late.

So I made her breakfast and we talked and and she checked her emails and and them other friends rang to say that they were running late for music class here and english lession also, so was glad as we had just finished breakfast and then after awhile the other friends arrived for lunch which I could eat much as was too close to breakfast.

So one friend left and the others stayed and started the Bolivian music lession they are teaching me. Then continued on to english lession.
So after waking up so late I have guest here til 5pm so was glad for peace and quiet after they had left. I was supposed to go out for dinner with different friends but mostly likly will stay home where is dry and warm

Do you speak my language

Its frustrating shopping and you know that you are saying the correct thing
but they say to you that they don't understand you
they are only used to americans so my aussie accent gets me into touble
all I wanted was normal shampoo but it took a while to get it

Yesterday I was speaking to my spanish friend in oz and she is amazed how back wards bolivia is
it never seems to move forward like the other parts of sth america
she was surprised when I told her that I can't flush my toilet paper as we have to put it in a bin and empty it everyday. That is one of my bet hates here and the other is the terrible smeals around the markets.
OH how i miss the simplicity of Sydney but have to trust that God has me here for a reason

Christmas day flood

Today was a very humbling experience.
I went to my Bolivian friends house and we had a nice lunch and watch a movie
When I went to use her bathroom it was only a whole in the ground and they kept apologising and I thought well I need to go so have to try and use it.

then I caught a taxi home and realised that my street was flooded in so I had to get out the taxi and take my shoes off and walk thru knee high water and I was hoping to come home to a cuppa of tea and discoverd that my whole apartment had been flooded.

It took us over one hour to mop up so tomorrow I have heaps of cleaning to do.
Will upload photos when its safe to plug in laptop

Begging for Christmas

Well today I went down town to buy some meat to cover me over christmas as I knew I am not going out any where for dinner over christmas so stocked up on food.

I was amazed how many families from the country area's of cochabamba were in town begging on the streets with their children. It just breaks your heart but you can't help them as their are too many.

they have their children sleeping on the street while they are breastfeeding there babies its not a pretty site to see everything hanging out.

I wish I had litte spanish tracks with me to hand out but not I didnt.
I know the lady who helps me with my visa hands out cheap little tracks.

I know that children are begging for christmas in australia also but in a different way. They are begging for it to arrive and while Bolivia is begging for food.

making Cookies

also yesterday we had fun making cookies with 30 girls
there is aproximately 10 girls in each home. so I went to each home on the same block of land and made each batch and put it in the fridge and kept moving from home to home and at the end of the day they finally got to decorate their biscuits and I managed to take photos of most of the girls which I will down load and add soon.

well I am getting used to being caught out in the rain during this rainy season.
sometimes a umbrella doesnt help when its hailing and you are stuck under a tree for a while until you decide to move over the street to a shop until your friend arrives.
which we decided to go home to my place and wait the rain out but after 3 hrs I decided to stay home and my friend went out to find her family.
so yes wet shoes and socks again.

I have plently of invitations for the 24th but not much happening for the 25th so far
I may not know til the last minute if I am going out on the 25th so maybe my 1st time home. but I have been invited to visit the girls at the american home if I wish to and if there is transport for me to get there. so time will tell

Merry Christmas

Driving experience No: 2

Yes I am mad to ever get into that car again but it needed to be done.

After my prayer meeting which only one friend came she said we could take the car and get the air put into the tyres and that would help the balance until we get it to a mechanic.

I 1st dicovered that you don't go to the service station to get air in your tyres and that there are not many places around who put air into tyres and that you also have to pay.

I asked my landlady and she suggested a place nearby so yes we went there and they put the air in put told me that the tyre was damaanged and that it would go flat again. So this tells me that some one has been driving this car without us knowing.
so phoebe can sort that out later on.

We returned the car to Phoebe house and when I went to my friends house both my friend and her mum said that I was very brave as they hate to drive here.

Merry Christmas

Driving in Bolivia

Hi all
Last night I decided to drive my friends car and take 4 ladies home.
Now it was my 1st time ever to drive here. I knew that I would have to learn to drive on the other side of the road but my brain kept telling me that it was wrong.
Now it was dark and raining and I didnt know where the roads went.
I had 4 friends in the back seat telling me to go in all different directions and the car didnt have much air in the tyres and the carewas in desparate need for a wheel alignment. We tried 3 service stations before getting petrol and we drove around for one hour and one lady got out as she said she was near her home.
I couldnt do a hill start as the car was not working right so I asked Rosemary to take over and drive this car home.
she was nice enough to take my car home and the leftover 2 ladies had to walk home and we hope to take it to the mechanics soon.
so at the moment I am happy with transport.

Also we had a christmas party at the bilingual preschool
I was doing fine until Peter moorehouse started handing out christmas presents to the kids
which the kids had to buy each other and it made me think about Mily and that she would be celebrating her 1st christmas in Italy

I should be putting up my tree but its too emotional as it reminds me of mily in 20066

Trusting People

Hi this week has been very frustrating on many levels.

Besides coming back to the country where I lost my daughter to another family (failed adoption) silly lawyers who say trust me and then run away when it doesnt work) While trying to do a visa process where another lawyer has run off with my money last year I was told that the rummur was that I was
TRAFFICING CHILDREN IN BOLIVIA!

What a joke!
why would I come back to a country where I lost daughter if this was true

I have lost all for the Gospel and only God will judge all these people

Thanks to a nice lady name rosemany I have finally started afresh my new visa process
